Not only the wardrobe should be changed during the cold season, but also your skincare routine! As colder temperatures approach, dry air, frigid winds, and constant exposure to indoor heaters suck the moisture from your skin and strip it of oils essential for healthy skin barrier function. These elemental conditions can also spark skin sensitivity, redness, and irritation. So no doubts, different conditions require different skincare routine as well. Here are essential tips for natural skincare, so you could get your best winter skin you ever had!
1. USE LUKEWARM WATER
Love taking hot showers in the winter? We get it, but keep in mind, that it can absolutely wreak havoc on your skin. Hot showers can dry out your skin, cause itchiness, rashes and even breakouts because how water stripes your skin of its natural oils and healthy bacteria. Wash your face with lukewarm water and keep it out of the hot water in the shower.
2. STAY HYDRATED, HUMIDIFY THE AIR
Inside or outside, the air is drier in winter. And as a result, water evaporates from your body easily. You need to keep your skin hydrated. You can also install a humidifier to manage the moisture level in your home, especially bedroom. This will certainly keep your skin much happier. And don’t forget to drink enough water!
3.USE THE RIGHT SKINCARE PRODUCTS
- SWITCH TO A MOISTURIZING CLEANSER. CLEANSING OILS AND BALMS
Traditional cleansers often contain ingredients like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (that irritates your skin), synthetic preservatives, fragrances, and harsh soaps. These ingredients can strip your skin of its natural oils and leave it thirsting for moisture. During the winter months, this can lead to dry, flakey, and irritated skin. Instead, opt for an oil-based cleanser or a natural cleanser that is free from these moisture-sucking ingredients. Oil based cleansers are strong enough to remove dirt/oils/makeup, but not too strong that they strip away your skin’s natural moisture. Yes, you can even use an oil-based cleanser if you have oily or acne-prone skin. In fact, these cleansers help to balance out oil production so that your skin doesn’t overproduce oil to compensate for the lack of moisture.
We love using cleansing balms and oils all year round, but they become especially beneficial on winter time. They effectively wash the skin while keeping the skin hydrated and not disrupting the skin barrier. Some people use them alone, some use it as the first step of double cleansing. But absolutely everyone can notice a huge difference!
Our suggestions of cleansing balms: MATCHA GREEN TEA – detoxifying, WITH NATURAL FRUIT AHA’s – pore refining for blackheads, PROPOLIS – healing, antiseptic.
Our suggestions of cleansing oils: JUICE BEAUTY Cleansing oil.
- YES, YOU SHOULD USE A TONER
Many people skip this step, but it is an essential part of a great daily skin care routine—especially during the winter months. Toners are generally water-based liquids which are applied to the skin after cleansing and before moisturizing. They are great for balancing out our skin’s pH after cleansing, removing dirt/oil from pores, and adding a bit of hydration to the skin. A great toner also primes the skin for better absorption of our skin care products. This means that toning can actually make your moisturizer more effective.
While toners are great, conventional toners contain ingredients which can actually dry out the skin (alcohol, fragrances, and synthetic preservatives). That is why it is best to stick with an all-natural toner that contains no nasty ingredients. Moreover, natural toners are typically made with essential oils, various plant-based waters (like rose water), aloe vera juice, hazel, coconut water, and rose and other ingredients which work to draw moisture into the skin. (one more reason to switch your beauty products to natural ones!)
Our suggestions of toners: ECO BY SONYA Superfruit toner, EDIBLE BEAUTY Citrus Rhapsody.
- EXOLIATE, BUT GENTLY
Exfoliation is really useful all year round, it helps to remove dead skin cells, slough off dry/flakey skin, and clears clogged pores to reveal soft glowing skin. This is essential because clogged pores and dead skin cells make it harder for you skin to efficiently absorb other skin care products.
However, don’t get crazy with it – in winter time you should be extra careful and exfoliate really gently, and not too often. Exfoliation is better done at night, since it can leave your skin for vulnerable to UV.
Our suggestions of exfoliators: JUICE BEAUTY Green Apple PEEL FULL STRENGTH.
- ADD A LAYER OF HYDRATING SERUM / OIL OR COMBINE THEM
Applying a nourishing serum before sealing it in with a moisturizer has become a winter skincare step you can’t skip. Using serums or oils before your cream is a great way to pack in extra moisture and key ingredients, and your skin will take all that it can get in the winter. If you have naturally dry skin or fear you’re on the brink of dehydrated skin, you can upgrade your serum to a facial oil. Plus, serums and oils are usually high in vitamins, antioxidants, botanicals, and other skin-nourishing and -hydrating ingredients that will boost your winter skin care routine.
Our suggestions for oils & serums: EDIBLE BEAUTY Exotic seed of youth, EDIBLE BEAUTY Glowing skin smoothie, JUICE BEAUTY Stem cellular Vinifera, ECO BY SONYA Glory oil, JUICE BEAUTY Stem Cellular anti-wrinkle Serum, EDIBLE BEAUTY Serum Exotic Goddess.
Blemish prone skin types could stick to their skincare products, if they are gentle enough, do not dry out. Others could choose rich, heavier moisturizers, that will not let your skin to dry out. Look for ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, bakuchiol, and botanical oils. When used in conjunction, they can soothe inflammation, restore hydration, and strengthen the skin barrier. And don’t forget the SPF, which yes, you do need during winter. Especially if there is snow!
Our suggestions for winter moisturizers: JUICE BEAUTY Stem Cellular Anti wrinkle moisturizer, JUICE BEAUTY Blemish Clearing moisturizer – for blemish prone skin.
- USE POWERFUL CREAM / OIL FOR NIGHT
Treat your skin while you sleep! No natural winter skin care routine would be complete without a solid night cream. Not only will a good night cream reduce moisture loss, it can also boost collagen production, reduce wrinkles, and help with cell turnover. But you don’t have to use a “cream” only. Depending on your skin type, a light hydrating oil or serum may be preferable to a thick cream.
Our suggestions for rich night creams: JUICE BEAUTY Anti-wrinkle overnight cream STEM CELLULAR, EDIBLE BEAUTY Coco Bliss Intensive repair.
- TAKE A GOOD CARE WITH YOUR EYE ZONE
As you probably know, the skin around your eyes is extremely thin. So, during winter, this area of the face is especially affected by the harsh winter conditions. If you don’t normally apply an eye cream, winter is the time to do so. Not only does an eye cream minimize dark circles and under-eye bags, they also pack in some anti-aging action to protect against crow’s feet. Look for eye creams with Peptides, Ceramides, and fruit oils like Avocado Oil.
Our suggestions for eye care: JUICE BEAUTY Anti wrinkle Eye treatment, EDIBLE BEAUTY Gold rush, ECO BY SONYA Brightenint eye cream.
- DON’T FORGET THE LIPS
Lips will be the first to remind you, that it’s about time to change your skincare routine to a winter skincare routine. Give them some extra attention, by using a gentle lipscrub, sealing the moisture with natural balms and oils. You can find our suggestions for all lipcare products right HERE.
